1. Create Your Account

To get a free refund estimate you need to create your TaxRefunds.co.nz account.

To create your account:

1. Enter your IRD number as your username.
2. Enter your personal identification and contact details.
3. Select your password to create your secure password-protected account.
   We will send you an email to confirm you are up and running.
4. Supply your ID to have your identity confirmed.

Your TaxRefunds.co.nz account is the best way to keep your personal details secure.

Once you log on to your account you can update your details, including changing your password, and check the whereabouts of your refund or use the support centre to ask any questions. You can send us your ID by whatever method is easiest for you — via cellphone SMS, email or fax. Once we have verified your ID we can proceed with your refund application. Emailing the support centre through your account means we can prioritise your refund and you can easily track it through the refund process.

2. Get a Refund Estimate

Now that your account is up and running, you can apply for your first refund estimate — it takes 5 minutes to complete for any of the past 5 years.

To get a free refund estimate:

1. Sign in to your account and select apply now.
2. Select the year you want to check, and confirm your personal and address details are correct.
3. Tick your income sources, complete any information about interest, dividends or Maori Authority distributions and expenses.
4. If you weren’t in the country for more than 325 days in the tax year, complete the partial tax year dates.
5. Check the terms and conditions, confirm your details are correct, then submit.

Do You have Dependant Children?

If you have dependant children, 18 years or younger living with you, you can also get a free estimate for Working for Families tax credits for any of the past 5 years.

Just check the boxes on the way through. It does mean an extra form to print and complete, which you must return to our office. Your estimate takes longer, but it is well worth the time and effort.

Do you have IRD numbers for your children?

If not, complete the Application Form for IRD Number for Your Children with all your relevant details and sign.

Take it, with 2 forms of ID for both yourself and each child, (see the form for more details) to your local Post Shop or Automobile Association. The IRD will process your application and your children’s IRD numbers will be posted to you.
